Instructions
for Using Lazertran Waterslide Decal Paper for Artists
Images must be copied onto a sheet of Lazertran
using Color Photo Copiers only. Canon, Xerox, Ricoh,
Minolta. The new coating that will take higher temperature
fusion rollers, 200 Degrees C, 392 degrees F. is now
in stock. For the new Canon IRC2100 Photo Copiers use
the "Special Papers" setting. This feeds the
paper through slowly and avoids jamming.
Due to photocopier manufacturers
increasing the fusing tempertures of their machines,l
a new version of Lazertran is sold to acommodate this
development. Also, new toners for some of these machines
dissove in real turpentine.
A new solvent has been found to dissolve the Lazertran
decal in the etching process, Isoproyl Alcohol, or I.P.A.
or 2-propanol or Isopropanol, available in your pharmacy,
that dissolves the decal but not the toners.
This is much less toxic than
turpentine and is, in fact, the main ingredient of rubbing
alcohol. In the etching process you can substitute this
alcohol for turpentine.
For dissolving Lazertran into
paper for one off prints and for wood and stone we still
reccommend using Pure Turpentine as it gives a better
result for these applications than Alcohol.
Lazertran is a water slide decal paper
that allows you to transfer your own full colour images
onto almost any surface including, paper, canvas, fabric,
wax, ceramic tiles, glass, sheet metals and foils, plaster,
wood and stone. It can also be used as an etch resist
and to make stamped and embossed decals and as a way
to put images on vacuum forming plastic.
To
Fix To Glass, Ceramic Tiles and Shiny Sheet Metal and
Foils
For non-absorbent shiny surfaces, no glue
other than the gum on the back of the transfer is required.
Simply soak Lazertran in water and slide the transfer
onto the carrier. Expel all air bubbles with a rubber
squeegee and allow to dry for 24 hours. The image can
be varnished for protection with either acrylic or oil
based varnish.
To
Bake on Ceramics, Metal and Glass to Give a Hard, Waterproof
Finish
- Print your image on the shiny side of a sheet
of Lazertran in reverse.
- Put the printed sheet in a hot oven for a minute
or so, or use a heat gun to make sure the toners
are completly fused on the paper. The image should
go very shiny. This will ensure you do not get any
tiny bubbles in the image later in the process.
- Cut the image to size and soak in luke warm water
until the transfer loosens on the backing sheet.
- Place the transfer face down onto the surface
and slide the backing sheet off. Wash away any gum
as this may go brown later on during the baking
then squeegee flat to remove any excess water and
air bubbles.
- Put into a domestic oven at the lowest possible
heat setting with the door open for 15 minutes.
- After this close the door for a further 15 minutes.
- Now increase the temperature very slightly and
continue to do this over the next 45 minutes until
the transfer becomes shiny like a glaze.
This will happen at about 200 degrees
C or 420 degrees F. As domestic ovens are not very accurate,
rely on the look of the transfer rather than temperture.
The image will now be protected by the clear transfer.

Instructions
for Using Water Based Adhesive Method for Paper or Canvas
and for Decoupage
- Stretch your paper or canvas over a flat board.
Prime canvas the with acrylic primer. For paper,
seal with clear acrylic medium, or craft glue to
avoid cockling and increase mobility of the transfer.
Allow to dry.
- Trim your image to size and lower, into clean
water. The paper will roll up. Allow to soak for
a minute or so.
- Using a short haired roller or brush, apply a
fresh coat of acrylic onto the area to which you
wish to fix the image,
- Lift the Lazertran out of the water and partly
slide the transfer off the backing sheet.
- Lay the Lazertran onto the wet acrylic. Position
and slide out backing sheet from under the transfer.
- Position your image, then carefully expel air
bubbles with the roller.
- Allow to dry flat overnight. Matt acrylic medium
can then be applied to give a matt finish.
The application of overlays and decoupage
is as above. To apply images over oil paint see Fixing
with pure turpentine.

Pure
Turpentine Method
To Fix Lazertran to Paper, Wood, Wax,
Stone, Plater, PVC, and Difficult Surfaces without Acrylic
- Trim your image to size and lower, wide edge first,
into clean water. Allow to soak for a minute or
so.
- Lift the Lazertran out of the water and make sure
you have wiped away any excess moisture.
- Soak your receiving surface with pure turpentine
and slide the transfer onto the surface.
- For paper, carefully roll flat with a soft roller
moistened with pure turpentine and leave overnight.
The transfer will melt and migrate into the surface.
Do not over work the transfer, as it will smudge.
Any bubbles will disappear overnight.
- For surfaces other than paper, for instance rough
wood, the melting of the image into nooks and crannies
can be helped by brushing the image with pure turpentine.
Do not force into holes or curves, as it will do
this itself overnight.
- For putting over existing oil paint, wipe the
painting or brush over with pure turpentine. Then
lay transfer onto the surface. If too much turpentine
is used the image will break up. Always lay flat
until dry. n.b. Turps substitute or white spirit
will not work.
To
Transfer a Stamped Image onto a Difficult Surface or
Curve Using Lazertran
Stamp your image directly onto a sheet
of Lazertran using waterproof stamping ink. Dry using
a heat gun or iron then apply to surfaces using craft
glue or any of the above methods..
You can also use embossing powder with Lazertran. Use
an iron through the backing paper or heat gun to set.
When using embossed image you cannot use the pure turpentine
method it is best to use craft glue to apply the stamped
or embossed transfers.

Lazertran
Ironed onto Fabric
- Copy your image in reverse then place the Lazertran
face down on the cloth.
- Set iron to hot and iron onto the cloth until
it is well stuck.
- Wet the backing paper and peel off. Wipe away
gum from image and allow to dry.
- Place baking parchment, not grease proof paper,
over image and iron. Allow to cool then peel off
baking parchment and repeat until the image sinks
into the cloth.
This method can be used for needlepoint
canvas and tapestry canvas as a guide.

Lazertran
on Metal Foil
Simply iron onto the foil. Turn over and
iron again to make sure it is well stuck. Immerse in
water and remove backing sheet. When dry the foil can
be reheated to make sure of full adhesion.
Lazertran as an Etch Resist
- Copy image in black and white and negative using
a colour photocopier onto a sheet of Lazertran.
Bump the black toner density up to maximum. ( Now
you should make sure the toners have been melted
onto the Lazertran properly by putting the sheet
into a hot oven. In a short time the black toner
will go shiny. This will avoid bubbles forming later
in the process). Now cut to the size of your etching
plate.
- Soak in water for a minute or so, then place the
transfer, image side down, onto the degreased plate,
slide off the backing paper, then, using a soft
rubber squeegee, expel all air bubbles, creases
and moisture.
- Put in a domestic oven and increase the temperature
from zero as slowly as possible up to 170 degrees
C until the transfer melts and becomes sticky, then
allow to cool. This will take at least an hour.
The first 100 degrees are crucial and must not be
rushed as this can cause bubbling. If small bubbles
do occur before the decal has started to melts then
take the plate out of the oven and using your finger
smooth out any tiny bubbles, they are probably steam.
- Place the plate in a bath of pure turpentine and
wash away the decal, leaving only the toners on
the plate. All traces of the slimy decal must be
removed. A soft brush can be used. This will take
about 20 minutes.
(i) If you are using the new Isoproyl Alcohol to
remove the decal then do not use a bath but pour
a little of the alcohol onto the plate, leave for
a while and wipe away with a non abrasive cloth
or paper. Repeat until the decal has gone and you
are back to the metal. This will take some time
and quite a few applications of the alcohol. Be
sure to remove all the decal as any residual decal
will block the plate from etching. Wash with hot
water and washing up liquid.
- Lift out and carefully wash off turpentine in
warm soapy water.
An aqua tint can now be applied. You are
now ready to etch. Before printing remove toners with
solvent, nail polish remover or wintergreen oil or heat
until melted and wipe off with rag and white spirits
Note. This method can also be used on
glass and metal if you want a full colour image and
wish to remove the decal.

Instructions for Using
Lazertran Silk Paper
Lazertran Silk is a a paper designed
to be used with any toner based printer as heat is not
an issue. It is for use with closely woven silk or satin,
ribbons, metal foil, Polyclay and with 3M Photo Mount
Spray onto almost any surface.
To
Iron onto Silk or Satin
- Copy your image in reverse onto a sheet of Lazertran
Silk paper using any toner based copier.
- Iron your fabric flat with a medium heat iron.
- Lay the fabric over the image and iron well until
stuck. Do not let your iron touch any part of the
image as it will melt and stick to your iron.
- When stuck, do not pull at it, just lay into water,
paperside side down, push under the water until
the whole peice is wet and leave until the backing
sheet falls off.
- Lift the silk carfully from the water and lay
face down onto an ironing surface. Pull flat then
using a cool iron carefully, without weight, dry
the silk a little. Lift up and place down again
and repeat until dry.
- Lay a sheet of baking parchment, not grease proof
paper, over the image and iron through the paper.
Allow to cool then peel off. Job done.
For Metal Foil
Iron the image onto the foil with a hot
iron until it sticks then submurge in a bath of hot
water. Leave for a few minutes until the paper floats
off. Do not pull the paper off but swish your hand in
the water until it floats off.
Allow the foil to dry then put foil on
a hot iron to make sure all the toners adhere properly.
To
Use Lazertran Silk as an Etch Resist
Copy your image in a toner based machine
in black and white and negative. Have the black toners
density bumped up to maxium.
Degrese the plate. Put the plate on a
hot plate about 350 degrees C 180 degrees C and allow
to get hot.
Having cut the image to size place carefully
on the plate, you only have one chance to position the
image, and press onto the plate using a tissue making
sure the image has good contact and sticks. This will
happen very quickly.
Immediatly put the plate into a bath of
very hot water and allow to soak until the backing paper
floats off when you swish the water with your hand.
Do not pull at the backing sheet.
When the paper floats off, lift the plate
out of the water and allow allow to dry.
When dry return the plate to a cool part
of the hot plate to remelt the toners and make sure
of good adhesion. Now etch as normal. An aquatint may
be applied.

To
Put an Image onto Polymer Clay
Print the image in reverse or mirror.
Press the image well onto the clay . Leave for 30 minutes
then immerse the clay in a bath of water. Allow to soak
for one or two minutes then swish the water until the
backing paper floats off. If you leave the image for
an hour you will be able to bend and form the polyclay
as the image will start to melt into the Polymer Clay.
When satisfied bake according to the Polymer Clay manufacturer's
instruction.
To
Put Lazertran Silk onto Open Weave Cloth such as Muslin
or Silk or Voile
If Lazertran Silk is put on an open weave
the image will not adhere. To fix this spray the image
before applying with 3M permanent Photo Mount Spray
and apply face down onto the cloth. Iron at a medium
heat then soak in water until the backing paper floats
off. Allow to dry.

Instructions for Lazertran Inkjet
Waterslide Decal Paper
Lazertran has tried the inkjet paper through
a Canon IRC 2100 Photo Copier set @ Special Papers setting
and it worked well. They cannot say the Inkjet paper
can be used in all Photo Copiers. but it works in this
one. As we test other manufacturers we will post the
results.
Lazertran inkjet is designed to be used
with any printer that uses inks. It is not designed
for toner based machines.
The suface of the inkjet paper is absorbent and will
only take a small amount of ink. If too much ink is
applied then the image will bleed. Find a setting on
your inkjet printer that applies as little ink as possible.
On my Epson the best setting I have found is transparency
setting.
Put your sheet of Lazertran Inkjet paper
into your printer and print onto the smooth white egg
shell side. It is a little difficult to tell the difference
between the back and front but the back is a slightly
off white greenish blue.
- Print your image and allow to dry for 1 hour.
In this time the inks will become waterproof.
- Soak in water until the decal is released. In
warm water this can 30 seconds.
N.B. The decal will dry white.
N.B. Use warm water to soak the decal to avoid the
edges curling up when drying on your chosen substraite.
- If you want the decal to remain white then fix
to your surface using gum or a waterbased adhesive.
- If you want the decal to be clear then there are
2 ways to do this.
(i) Apply an even coat of oil based varnish to the
image and allow to dry before soaking in water.
The decal may need a second coat of varnish to make
sure the whole image is penatrated with varnish.
(ii) Apply the image to the surface using gum, (
you get it at a stationers for sticking paper) It
is important to use gum as any acrylic glue touching
the image will keep that part white for ever. Allow
to dry then apply a coat of oil based varnish to
the image. With this method you can leave some of
the decal clear and some parts white if you wish.
- Our inkjet paper is not suitable for cloth, but
I have had success baking it onto ceramics.
Baking
on Ceramics
- Paint the image with oil based varnish and allow
to dry.
- Cut to size and saok in water for about a minute
and apply the decal varnished side down onto the
ceramics.
- Heat in a domestic oven as slowly as possible
starting at the lowest setting and increse in as
small a step as possible over about 1 hour until
the decal gets shiny.
- Allow to cool. NB The decal may go a little yellow
if heated too high.
Turpentine Method on Wood,
Paper, Cork or Plaster
Lazertran inkjet can be used with real
turpentine.
- Soak in water until the decal releases then remove
any excess water.
- Paint the surface of the object with real turpentine,
slide the decal off the backing sheet and apply
onto the turpentine soak surface.
- Mix some oil based varnish 50% with turpentine
and apply onto the image and leave to dry.
